On Friday March 24, Des Heffernan organised a golf day at the Mt. Barker-Hahndorf Golf Club in memory of his family friend, Peter Murphy, who lost his battle to Pancreatic Cancer in 2013. Des’ death motivated Peter to do something to help change the statistics by raising money for the Avner Foundation.
Below is the motivation for Des to fundraise on behalf of his friend and the Foundation;
“The golf day came about because of a longstanding friendship with the Murphy family who lost their father Peter in 2013. His wife Judy contacted me to donate to the fund and when I looked into the Avner Foundation I was astonished that nothing had been done to support research in this space for many years. By the same token I was also impressed at the progress the foundation had made in such a short time. So I thought how can I help out.
Peter was a very good sports person and community man who was well known and highly respected in our country town. As a longstanding member of the Mt Barker-
Hahndorf Golf Club and knowing that the local community would honour Pete, I thought why not have a Charity Golf Day. To me it was a no brainer. Since then, the Golf Club came on board and a lot of work has gone into planning and promoting the day
The outpouring of support and generosity has been incredible. Thank you so much to those who have contributed. We are sure it is going to be a terrific success, raising awareness and valuable funds for the foundation.”
We are so pleased to report that $8,000 was raised from this event and all funds will go into research for Pancreatic Cancer.
