On Friday March 24, Des Heffernan organised a golf day at the Mt. Barker-Hahndorf Golf Club in memory of his family friend, Peter Murphy, who lost his battle to Pancreatic Cancer in 2013. Des’ death motivated Peter to do something to help change the statistics by raising money for the Avner Foundation.
On Thursday night we launched a “Council of Governors” for the Foundation. The evening was attended by governors, directors and friends of the Foundation. The governors are people who have helped raise significant funds over the years and through their various activities have brought awareness to this underdog of cancers.
Anyone who has been involved with Pancreatic Cancer understands its vicious cycle, insufficient awareness and funding means it has fallen way behind in medical research. The lack of research means Pancreatic Cancer is almost always diagnosed when a sufferer is close to death. Almost no survivors means almost no awareness, which is why it receives insufficient funding.
Anyone who has ever attended one of our walks will know we encourage everyone to come dressed up in purple (the international colour of Pancreatic Cancer) and the more creative the better! Prizes are awarded for the most creatively dressed adult, child and group and the reward for going to so much effort is a wonderful distinctive black and white “goody bag” filled to the brim with muk Haircare products.
