Townsville 2017 'Put Your Foot Down' Walk for Pancreatic Cancer

Friday, 18 August 2017 Posted in Past Events, 2017

On Sunday, July 16 the people of Townsville and the regional community held their third “Put Your Foot Down” walk. A total of 260 people registered for the walk and a phenomenal $39,391 was raised for Pancreatic Cancer research setting a new record for Townsville.

The Strand was once again transformed into a “sea of purple” as our enthusiastic walkers paraded along the promenade under clear blue skies.

We must sincerely thank our amazing co-ordinators Mick and Kristen for all their efforts in organising the walk again this year. They not only work tirelessly in setting up this event but they are always thinking of new ideas to raise money for the walk.

For the very first time a raffle was held with first prize being a 30-minute helicopter flight for 5 people. Our sincere thanks to Meridian Helicopters Australia for donating this wonderful prize and to Anthony and Sarah Ponti for all their help and expertise with setting up the raffle.

Team Townsville also organised for purple ribbons to be made up and sold prior to and at the walk, and we had some wonderful volunteers face painting for a gold coin donation.

Thank you again to the Townsville Ross Valley Lions Club for manning the BBQ stall and making sure all our hungry walkers and volunteers were well fed and hydrated pre and post walk.

Thank you to Jess for taking on the role of MC and doing such a fantastic job.We would also like to thank Kassandra for sharing her story of her dad’s loss to the disease. Everyone was moved by her story and her courage in telling it.

We must also thank two outstanding families for their ongoing help and support; the Sneddon Family for coming down from Cairns especially to take part in the walk and the family of Delia Ponti who not only shared their heartfelt story in the Townsville Bulletin but also attended the walk in honour of Delia’s memory.

Thank you to our generous corporate supporters who ensure the maximum amount can be invested in research to change the outcomes of the disease Wolworths, Coca-Cola Amatil, Wellcom, RedJelly, Muk Haircare Global and Beak & Sons.

We are incredibly grateful for all who registered, fundraised, dressed up, helped in the lead up to it and on the day and all contributed to this record breaking walk.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2018!
