Brisbane 2016 'Put Your Foot Down' Walk for Pancreatic Cancer

Tuesday, 08 November 2016 Posted in Past Events, 2016

Thank you Brisbane! Not only did you put down more than a thousand feet but you also set a new Brisbane record and raised over $50,000 (and still growing)!

The Brisbane 2016 “Put Your Foot Down” walk was held on Sunday, October 30, and proved to be our most challenging event to date. Not only did we have to find a new location for the walk but also a new local manager to take on the task of organising the event. The walk that was, at one stage cancelled, then went on to set a new Brisbane record and raised over $50,000 (and donations are still coming in!) and attracted over 500 registered walkers!

This event would not have happened without the incredible organizational abilities of our local manager Zoe, who answered our cry for help on Facebook. Zoe did a fantastic job and we are so grateful to her for giving those in Brisbane, and further afield, who have been affected by this awful disease an opportunity to be amongst those who understand and those who want to support the Foundations vision of doubling the number of survivors of Pancreatic Cancer by 2020.

Thank you to all who registered, fundraised, dressed up in purple and donated to the walk and raised such a staggering amount. Without your commitment and passion these incredible results would not have happened.

Sincerest thanks to Zoe’s family and friends and to “Annie’s Army” who helped set up, man stalls, and positioned themselves as marshalls along the route.

A very special thank you to Annie and Teresa who shared their personal stories with everyone. They were difficult stories to share, but helped give a first hand understanding of the disease and the importance of raising funds to help change the future outcomes of this cancer.

And a big thank you to our amazing volunteers;

  • Our wonderful MC, Jake, who did a fantastic job.
  • The Hellenic Lions Club who gave up their morning to run the BBQ and helped feed the hungry crowd.
  • Our musician in residence, Alex, who played guitar and sang for us. This was a first for any of our walks and everyone loved it.
  • Our photographer, David, who took some amazing shots of our volunteers and our walkers as well as our all important group shot.
  • Our fitness guru, Caitlin, who organised our warm-up exercises prior to the commencement of the walk.

Thank you to Tim from Coca-Cola Amatil for helping out at the walk, and providing some much needed equipment, and for helping out at so many of the previous walks as well.

Our wonderful corporate supporters generously donated groceries, prizes, sausages and drinks as well as services such as artwork design and printing posters. They helped ensure the maximum amount could be raised for research into the disease. Thank you, as always Woolworths Group, Coca-Cola Amatil, Beak & Sons, Muk Haircare Global, Red Jelly and Wellcom Worldwide.
